Man nabbed for arson

A THIRTY-NINE year old man of Chama District has been arrested for setting a house on fire after a marital dispute burning property valued at K1,850.

Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Njase said the incident happened in Muzalelo village in Chama District.
He said Getrude Mpalo 30, of Muzalelo in Chief Kambombo district reported that her husband Mvula Chomi 39, of Kasenjele village set her grass thatched house ablaze.
Mr Njase said five (5) bags of maize valued at K 850.00, beddings and clothes amounting to K 1000 got burnt in the inferno.
“Brief facts are that Getrude Mpalo and Mvula Chomi are a married couple who are currently on separation. The couple had a marital dispute hence they went on separation forcing the husband to leave his matrimonial home to go and stay in a nearby village,” Mr Njase said.
Mr Njase said the suspect on Monday around 23:00 hours visited his wife and four children and that his wife refused to allow him in the house.
“This did not go well with him and that is how he got the matches and burnt the house,” he said.
He said the wife saw flame of fire and rushed outside the house so that she could extinguish the fire but all her efforts were to no avail.
Mr Njase said the victim only managed to rescue her four children and a few household goods.
“Acting on this report, officers visited the scene of the crime and the findings are as follows; the house was burnt to ashes, it was observed that the fire started behind the house and spread to the rest of the house; only a few household goods were rescued from the fire,” Mr Njase said.
Mr Njase said the officers further apprehended the suspect and took him to Chama Police Station where he was interviewed and he admitted having set the house ablaze.
He said a docket of has been opened and that arrest been made.
Mr Njase said the officers collected some burnt items from the burnt house as exhibits.
He also said no life was lost in the inferno and that the suspect will appear in court.
