KMB Station old building to be demolished

By ROGERS KALERO

The Kitwe City Council (KCC) is to demolish the old dilapidated building at the Kitwe Main Bus (KMB) station to modernise the station and increase the floor area for inter mine buses,” Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya has said

Ms Mwaya said all the makeshift kiosks and booth owners have been notified of the decision by the local authority to demolish the dilapidated building at KMB and have been given three months to clear off and pave way for the demolition

Ms Mwaya said in a statement after touring the bus station that the vision of the local authority by 2026 was to  have the old KMB modernised under what it was calling Two-Phased Approach

“The first approach is maximum use of space.  We have started the journey to reclaim every square meter of plot KT269 (KMB). All makeshift kiosks and booths have been notified and given three months to clear off and pave way for demolition of our old dilapidated buildings.

‘This will increase the floor area for use of our Intermine buses. This will hopefully decongest the central business district of buses loading to other districts such as Ndola, Luanshya’ Ms Mwaya said

She said, phase two will be the construction of a multi storey decking platform for mixed use which will be done in 2024 and beyond’ she said

She said the Kitwe City Council shall embark on process to construct the Multi storey decking platform with the view to further expand capacity and add more beauty to the Station.

Meanwhile Mayor, Deputy Mayor Town Clerk and management of Kitwe City Council toured KMB to check buildings earmarked for demolition as well as progress on construction of Ticketing offices for intercity big Bus operators right at KMB.
