Human Rights activist Laura Miti has supported calls for President Hakainde Hichilema to conduct lifestyle audits for everyone close to him to prevent speculation. Miti, Executive Director of the Alliance for Community Action (ACA), stressed the need for a significant clean-up within the current government.
In a Facebook post, Miti argued that President Hichilema has the authority to conduct these audits and should do so to eliminate any doubts. She questioned the rationale behind recent Cabinet reshuffles, such as the transfer of Health Minister Sylvia Masebo to the Lands Ministry, asking if the President finds Masebo politically untouchable.
Miti noted that individuals even closer to the President than ministers had been the subject of serious allegations for years. She wondered if the President was aware of the rumors about some of his advisors’ involvement in corruption. Miti pointed to the transfer of Minister Sylvia Masebo, who was moved from Health to Lands amid allegations of corruption in medical supplies, as an example of troubling decisions.
Miti suggested that President Hichilema might mistakenly believe certain individuals are politically essential for his survival, drawing a parallel to former President Edgar Lungu, who retained cadres despite their negative influence to maintain power.
