Government to prioritise rural roads – Nkombo

MINISTER of Local Government and Rural Development, Garry Nkombo says the government will prioritise the development of the road network in rural areas.

Mr Nkombo has clarified that the source of the funds will come from the sixty percent of the community projects under the Constituency Development Funds (CDF).

ZANIS reports that Mr Nkombo was speaking when he officiated at an event held by the Institute of Local Government Administrators of Zambia (ILGAZ) in Lusaka yesterday.

Mr Nkombo has since urged   local authorities to be honest when handling public procurement and avoid misuse of their power.   “Ensure that you hire competent and authentic road contractors who can perform to the expectation of the government and the people of Zambia when given the contracts,” he said.

ILGAZ President Alex Mwansa said one key area where the institute wants to focus on is sustainable solid waste management policy which should address the issue of solid management across the country.

Mr Mwansa expressed concern that most cities across the country are affected by solid waste issues, hence the need to come up with a lasting solution on waste management.

Meanwhile, one of the members of the institute Namukolo Kalufyanya pledged to work hard in meeting all the needs of the communities through the utilizsation of CDF.
