LOAD SHEDDING TO CAUSE JOB LOSSES

By RUTH YAMABAYAMBA

ECONOMIST Kelvin Chisanga has predicted an increase in poverty levels as companies are likely to lay off most workers as a result of the persistent load shedding the country is experiencing.

Mr Chisanga says having access to electricity was one of the most important services in fighting poverty and improving the welfare of citizens because of production activities citizens engaged in.

He notes that the electricity outages were making it difficult for small businesses to advance which he said would negatively affect the economy of the country.

Mr Chisanga explains that despite Zesco’s adjustment in load shedding management, most businesses had decided to shut down because production plummeted.

He says with the drop in the performance of the economy, power outage were worsening the situation as most small businesses were failing to remain afloat as a result of the load shedding.
