UPND COUNCILLOR ACCUSES POLICE OFFICERS OF BEING CURRUPT

By RUTH YAMBAYAMBA

A UPND councillor in Lusaka has accused some police officers of being corrupt, saying “they only operate in their line of duty when offered some form of bribe.”

Kamwala Ward 5 councillor Mainda Simataa said in interview that most police officers have drifted from their line of work, this is why crime levels keep on rising.

Mr Simataa particularly cited the Godfrey Miyanda police station, demanding that it should be disbanded “as they do not work effectively and release dangerous criminals back on the streets.

He said most critical cases in the area are closed without any serious investigations being done.

Mr Simataa called on the police command to instill discipline in the service as Zambians have lost confidence in them because of their conduct.

Mr Simataa said the officers need to change their work culture for Zambians to take them serious. He said Zambians feel like they can survive without the police because they are failing to attend to their needs.
