The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has lauded President Hakainde Hichilema for abolishing the death penalty.
LAZ President Lungisani Zulu said the decision was commendable as the Zambian Constitution guarantees the right to life.
Mr. Zulu said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday said that so many other international statutes also guarantee the right to life.
Meanwhile, Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) Secretary General Emmanuel Chikoya said the abolition of the death penalty will reinforce progressive penalties focused on correcting and rehabilitating offenders.
Father Chikoya said the development is in line with the transformation of the Zambia Prison Service into Zambia Correctional Service.
President Hichilema abolished the death penalty and defamation of the President Law following his assent to the Penal Code Amendment Bill Number 25 of 2022.
The two laws had been in the Zambian statutes from colonial times and President Hichilema has over the years committed himself to abolishing the legislations in question. – ZNBC
