Nakonde woman jailed for trafficking children

A woman of Nakonde district in Muchinga Province, has been sentenced to 25 years simple imprisonment for trafficking in persons involving three children.

And the Chinsali High Court has also sentenced a man of Shiwang’andu District to seven years imprisonment with hard labour for theft of motor vehicle.

Appearing for sentencing in the Chinsali high court before Judge Justice Kelvin Limbani was Frahah Nakaonga facing three counts of trafficking in persons contrary to section 3(1) (2) (4) if the human trafficking Act number 11 of 2008 of the laws of Zambia.

In count one (1) the facts before the court were that on 8 April ,2021 in Nakonde district of Muchinga Province, Jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown, the convict intentionally  and unlawfully did traffic  a child namely Anne Chanda.

In the second count, the convict on 8 April, 2021 in Nakonde district jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown, the convict intentionally and unlawfully did traffic Grenda Nakamba.

The convict Nakoanga in count three in Nakonde district jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown, the convict intentionally and unlawfully did traffic a child namely Emaldah Kafunda.

In her mitigation, through defence counsel from Legal Aid Board Manda Kapisha, the Convict said she was remorseful and pleaded for maximum leniency.

In Sentencing the convict, Nakoanga, Kabwe based High Court Judge Justice Limbani said children should be protected from people like Nakaonga who want to harm them.

“Am therefore, sentencing to 25 years simple imprisonment for that you can reform and be deterred from committing a similar offense and also deter other would be offenders,” Judge Limbani said.

And in another matter, a man of Shiwang’andu district has been slapped with a 5 -year- sentence for theft of motor vehicle.

Fredrick Mukuka stood charged with a count of theft of motor vehicle contrary to section 281 A of the penal code, chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Particulars are that on 12 July, 2020 in Shiwang’andu district the convict stole a motor bike registration number GRZ 23 valued at K22, 000 a property of the republic of Zambia.

In mitigation, the convict Mukuka pleaded for maximum leniency from the court.

“The offence you are guilty of deserves a punishment so that you can have time to reflect, reform and be deterred from committing a similar offence,” he stated.

And Judge Limbani sentenced Mukuka to 5 year imprisonment with hard labour.
