CHRESO UNIVERSITY VICE CHANCELLOR SUED

FORMER Chreso University Vice Chancellor Dr Lawrence Mwelwa has been sued by the University Council alleging that he fraudulently obtained funds amounting to over K900, 000.

The University Council wants the Lusaka High Court to order Dr Mwelwa to refund funds totaling K 917, 650 inclusive of bank charges and taxes withdrawn from account 3015045820019 held at African Banking Corporation Zambia limited.

It also wants damages for conspiracy and negligence, interest and costs.

According to a statement of claim filed into court, the University Council stated that through its own investigations it did discover that the students that had been accepted to study at Chreso Ndola campus had been directed by Dr Mwelwa to make payment for University fees into an account number 3015045820019 held at African Banking Corporation Zambia limited.

It stated that in 2019, through its director and Chancellor asked African Banking to furnish them with details of the said account which showed that it belonged to Chreso University Student affairs congress.

The University Council stated that the account in question was controlled by the student Congress and not by Dr Mwelwa. It also stated that upon scrutiny of the account , it was discovered that it had a total of K1,093,228.98 which was deposited by the Ndola based students.

It also discovered that contrary to the Student affairs Congress minutes and mandate given to the former vice chancellor, he proceeded to withdraw on the said account amounting to about K917,650.00 meant for the University Council as University fees without any probable explanation.

The University Council claimed that the account was used as a conduit of fraud by the Dr Mwelwa who withdrew the money by coaxing Chreso University students to make deposits in a wrong account and thereafter making unauthorized withdraws.

It stated that it has suffered loss and damages and will continue to suffer if the total withdrawn sums are not restored to it.
