Man gets 6 months for drug trafficking

A 27 years old farmer of Pemba district will serve six months in a correctional facility for trafficking in Psychotropic Substances.
In this matter, the Choma Magistrates Court convicted Otrian Moonga on two counts of Trafficking in Psychotropic Substances contrary to the Psychotropic and Narcotic Drugs Act of the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offences are that Moonga trafficked in 23.1 grams of Marijuana Seeds and a Marijuana joint weighing 1.03 grams all products of Cannabis Sativa without lawful authority or medical recommendation.
When he appeared for facts before Court, Senior Public Prosecutor Alex Syulikwa stated that Moonga was apprehended at his home after the Drug Enforcement Commission Officers received information from an informant that there was a person in Pemba trafficking in suspected Marijuana.
The team led by DEC officer Sharon Sampa identified the house and introduced themselves to the suspect and the purpose of their visit before a search was carried out which yielded the recovery of the Marijuana seeds and joint.
Principal Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo after observing the fact that Moonga was a first offender who fends for his pregnant wife and disabled child; she sentenced him to six months imprisonment with hard labour.
