PEMBA District Commissioner (DC), Reginald Mugoba, has urged contractors that have been engaged to construct a number of projects to consider prioritizing the locals for employment.
Mr Mugoba said that contractors should not “import” labour from other districts but that the local people must be given the jobs.
He said that contractors must consider sub-contracting local companies as a way of empowering the indigenous Pemba residents.
The DC was speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation.
Pemba District is earmarked for a facelift following Government’s decision to construct a number of infrastructure development.
Among the projects earmarked for construction is the district administration offices, police station, civic centre, level one houses for the District Commissioner and Council Secretary, 20 low cost house, 10 medium cost houses and the post office.
All these projects have commenced and contractors have moved to the sites and scheduled to be completed in 12 months period.
Mr Mugoba said once the infrastructure was completed, it would automatically change the image of Pemba.
