Desperate man admits stealing shoes for pregnant wife

THE Choma Magistrates Court has slapped a 12 months sentence on a man for stealings shoes from Pep Stores for his pregnant wife.
In this matter Laston Chibele, 25, of Choma’s Zambia Township stood charged with Theft Contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence are that Chibele on October 29 stole 1 pair of shoes and a boys Short from Pep stores all valued at K164.
When he appeared for plea before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri, the accused person willingly admitted the charge.
He explained to the Court in mitigation that he resorted to stealing the shoes for his pregnant wife because he was broke and under im-mense pressure.
According to the facts stated by public prosecutor Alex Syulikwa, the accused was apprehended after he left the Store without paying for the items.
Despite being a first offender and readily admitting the charge, Magistrate Phiri sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment with hard la-bour.
Chibele was informed of his right to appeal within 14 days to the High Court if he was not happy with the ruling.
