5 years for motorbike theft

THE Chipata Magistrate Court has sentenced a 29 year old man of Mukupa village in Chief Chanje’s area to 5 years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a motorbike.

This is in a matter where Dennis Phiri appeared before Resident Magistrate Destine Kalusopa for one count of motor vehicle theft.

Particulars of the offence were that Phiri on dates unknown but between 31 May, 2020 and 20 June, 2020, in Chipata stole an unregistered SUN LG, valued at K11,000, property of Wedson Banda.

Phiri who readily admitted the charge was convicted accordingly.

In mitigation Phiri asked the court for lenience as it was his first time to be involved in such a crime.

When passing judgement, Magistrate Kalusopa said that cases of motorbike theft are on the rise in Chipata.

He stated that to help Phiri reform and to deter others from committing a similar offence, he was sentencing him to 5 years imprisonment effective from 20 June 2020.
