ABOUT 150 children drawn from eight primary schools in Livingstone over the weekend took part in a chess competition organized by Project Chess Zambia (PCZ).

PCZ Southern Province coordinator Bright Muyenga said in an interview yesterday that the tournament was aimed at introducing chess to children at a tender age.

Muyenga said PCZ was building the next generation of players and the tournament was the second having held the first one last year.

He explained that the initiative was important because PCZ wanted to let parents know the significance of introducing their children to chess as a sport.

Muyenga explained that chess was a sport which helped individual pupils to be quick thinkers, be more calculative and encourages them to take up mathematics in their education.

He said that the programme has been running in the district for

Muyenga said that as a way of motivating pupils, Project Chess Zambia had been paying school fees to best performers and further award some with school hampers and bicycles.

“The tournament has been running since last year and we have been teaching pupils from the eight selected schools to take up chess as a sport which can stimulate quick thinking and encourages pupils to like mathematics as a subject,

“Usually, the tournament is held during holidays but this time around, it will take place on Saturday, September 14 at Zambezi Primary School… We are expecting more 100 pupils both girls and girls to take part because it is a five rounds tournament,” he explained.

Muyenga thanked school authorities from the participating schools for allowing Project Chess Zambia to establish itself in the school in Livingstone.

The schools participating are Zambezi, Libuyu, Holy Cross, Highlands, Linda West, Maria Asumputa and Dambwa Combined.
