KEEP SURROUNDINGS CLEAN

We have been repeatedly told that a clean environment has shown to improve the healing odds of people with terminal illnesses, and even lessen the menace of other diseases like diabetes and obesity.

And looking to the future, renewable energy is significant in pollution extenuation because of the profits it delivers.

The strategic gains of renewable energy technologies are clean sources of energy that have a much lower environmental impact than conventional energy technologies.

An environment is a place where human beings, as well as plants and animals, live and therefore keeping it clean and neat is our responsibility.

It is, therefore necessary to keep our environment clean because we get fresh air and reduce pollution.

On the contrary, an unclean environment leads to a bad condition of a society, the advent of diseases and many more.

Principally throwing garbage all over the place as the case appears to be in most of our cities and towns will only make dirty our surroundings and contaminate the environment.

Needless to emphasize greener surroundings look gorgeous and also condense pollution to keep us fit and healthy.

Therefore making dirty our surroundings, especially by allowing street vending, will only cause a lot of harm to us. So we should all strive to keep our surroundings clean and live happy and healthy lives.

In fact, this is what prompted President Edgar Lungu to launch the “Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Programme” which regrettably has so far not yielded the intended results since it was re-launched in April 2017.

So the imploring of all Zambians by the government to own this clean programme could not have come at a better time than now when the issue of keeping our surroundings clean has become a hot debate.

The meeting by Lusaka City Council (LCC) and other stakeholders this week to discuss ways of stepping up cleaning activities in communities is an extremely reassuring development.

Yet we can all easily see that the programme has not transcended to the local communities and that people only participate in the monthly cleaning activities, especially when President Lungu is taking part.

“The President just gives us support but the onus is on all citizens to take the campaign as theirs if we are to achieve the desired results,” says Local government permanent secretary Amos Malupenga in a message to councilors at the meeting.

Mr Malupenga says councilors are key in mobilizing people in their respective communities to participate in the monthly Make Zambia Clean, Green, and Healthy Cleaning exercise.

He says councilors are always in contact with the people at the local level which makes it easy for them to mobilize people for cleaning activities.

Mr Malupenga has also called for the involvement of the media to help spread the word on the importance of keeping surroundings clean and has committed K200, 000 which translates into K6 000 per ward for this month’s cleaning activities.

Time is now for Lusaka residents including those in other cities and towns, to know that cleanliness gives rise to a good character by keeping body, mind, and soul clean and peaceful.

Maintaining cleanliness is an essential part of healthy living because it is the cleanliness only which helps to improve our personality by keeping clean externally and internally.
