Chavuma gears for agric growth

GOVERNMENT is more than determined to grow agriculture in Chavuma for job creation, says district commissioner Benjamin Mufunga.
Mr Mufunga said apart from that, the promotion of agriculture in the district would also contribute to the well-being of the national economy.
Speaking at the Seed-Co Field Day for 2018/2019 farming season, Mr Mufunga said the government was keen to make agriculture the main driver of the countryā€™s economy.
He said creating an enabling environment for the private sector to maximise production thereby creating jobs and wealth for the people was the role government would play.
He added that boarders have been opened for excessive grain like maize can be exported.
ā€œOur priority is to feed our citizens and to render support to our farmers so that they can realise profits through grain exports as the case is this year,ā€ he said
Mr Mufunga said the introduction of other crops like groundnuts and soya beans to the district would enhance crop diversification and improve food security.
Speaking at the same event farmerā€™s representative Doris Kawina said, the diversification of the economy to agriculture to make it the number one economic driver was a ā€˜pleasant decisionā€™.
Ms Kawina appealed to government to come to the aid of the farmers through provision of a good road network and transportation of farm produce to the markets.
