…as Local Government Minister survives accident

Three people have died on the spot while 13 others sustained injuries in a fatal road traffic accident involving a Toyota Hiace Minibus registration number ALC 351.
Meanwhile, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Vincent Mwale, has cheated death after the vehicle he was driving, a Toyota Prado registration number BAJ 518, was involved in a road traffic accident.
Confirming the incident, Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo told the Sun Newspaper in a statement that the accident happened due to a rear right tyre burst which made the driver, identified as Patrick Moyo, to lose control of the motor vehicle.
Ms Katongo who disclosed that the deceased are yet to be identified, said the accident happened around 10:20 hours near Sable Farm along Mumbwa Road yesterday.
“Involved was a Toyota Hiace Minibus registration number ALC 351 being driven by Patrick Moyo from east to west carrying 16 passengers of which three have died on the spot,” Ms katyongo said.
“The accident happened due to a rear tyre burst which made the driver to lose control of the motor vehicle and career off the road and in the process, the three who have died, jumped through windows,” she said.
She said some of the injured were admitted at Mwembeshi Clinic while those with serious injuries have been referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH)
Ms Katongo said the bodies of the deceased persons were deposited in the UTH mortuary.
In a related development, she said, there was a damage only accident which occurred on 22nd March, 2019 at about 18:40 hours at Mchimazi area along the Great East Road.
“Involved was Hon. Vincent Mwale, aged 40 years, of Rhodes Park, Lusaka also the Minister of Local Government and Housing, and Chipangali Member of Parliament, who was driving a motor vehicle Toyota Prado registration number BAJ 518 from west to east direction,” she said.
Ms Katongo said after the accident, the motor vehicle had a damaged grill, left fender and broken left headlamp.
She explained that the accident happened when he hit a cow which was crossing the road.
“The animal dashed into the bush after being hit,” she stated.
