SOFA makers of Mandevu compound in Lusaka have requested Government to set up proper infrastructure for them from which they will conduct their business.
One of the traders spoken to, Mathews Zulu, told the Sun that most customers were not taking them seriously because of the place they were trading from.
Mr Zulu complained that traders were unable to sell their merchandise at reasonable prices because of the place they were conducting business from.
“Government should help us set up proper infrastructure for people to take us seriously; you will see that even our prices will be high for us to make more profits. Our prices are too low because of where we are found and yet are furniture is the same with what is found in town.
Mr Zulu, who started his business in 1997, urged the youths to venture into business, instead of waiting for Government to offer them employment.
“Money is not difficult to find as long as you make a plan, if you really want something, then you will get it. Many people are weak just because they never went to college. Just do something and have money at the end of the day,So my advice to the youth is not to sit idle and wait for Government to offer them jobs. Do something, if it means digging a hole, dig it as long as at the end of the day you will have money? Use your brain,” he said.
Competition is stiff in any business but one needed to have a creative mind.
Another trader, Dominic Burongo said the sofa business was rather seasonal.
Mr Burongo said “business is slow because it has a season. The season in which this business performs well is beginning of April. We do make proper profits on days when the business is doing fine.”
