Thieving Lusaka maid jailed

By LUCY PHIRI

A MAID of Lusaka’s Mandevu compound has been sentenced to 12 months simple imprisonment and eight months suspended sentence for stealing US$2, 100, 180 pounds and K2, 500 from her employer.

When the matter came up on Friday for facts and sentencing, Magistrate George Njobvu found Martha Banda, 42, guilty and convicted her accordingly after she accepted the charge.

Banda pleaded guilty to one count of theft by servant contrary to Section 272 and 278 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Banda on November 17, 2022 in Lusaka, stole US$2, 100, 180 pounds and K2, 500 cash property of the said employer. In mitigation, Banda pleaded with the court for leniency as she was a mother and a bread winner.

Magistrate Njobvu said he had noted her plea but said such offences are rampant especially of maids stealing from their employers.

Mr Njobvu sentenced her to 12 months simple imprisonment with eight months suspended.

“You will only serve four months as the eight months is suspended,” he ruled.
