CHEMICAL FISHERMEN WARNED OF ARREST

The Fisheries Department in Chinsali District has warned fishermen using chemicals to fish that they will be prosecuted and jailed when caught.

Chinsali Acting District Fisheries Officer OSWARLD BANDA warned the fishermen following reports of people falling sick after consuming fish suspected to have been poisoned.

Mr. BANDA added that there have been unconfirmed reports of fishermen using chemicals to catch fish and that a number of households have reported cases of diarrhea after consuming it.

He said the department will continue collecting samples from markets to ascertain the allegations of the use of poisonous chemicals by the fishermen.

And a Fish trader from Chinsali new market CHILUFYA CHANDA, said a number of customers have complained of getting sick after consuming the fish.

Ms. CHANDA disclosed that not all the fish coming from the Chambeshi is poisonous and appealed to fishermen to desist from using chemicals.

She has lamented that if this is not curtailed by relevant authorities their business will be destroyed.
