VILLAGER BURIED ALIVE: Mwinilunga man dies while looking for gold

A 21-year-old man of Kashinakazhi village in senior chief Kanong’esha’s chiefdom in Mwinilunga district has died after the ground of the pit he was digging caved in and buried him.

Northwestern Province Commissioner of Police, Joel Njase has confirmed the incident and named the deceased as Lucky Kashinakazhi of Kawiko area.

Mr. Njase said the incident happened on June 12, 2021 around 06:00 hours when the deceased, in the company of another identified person, was digging in Kawayawaya pit, located next to Kasenseli gold mine perimeter wire fence.

He said the deceased and his colleague were digging with a hope of finding gold.

Mr. Njase named the other victim as Bernard Mbonge, 26, of Kapijimpanga village in Solwezi district who is currently resident in Manyama compound of Kalumbila district.

He said Mbonge sustained a cut on the forehead, a bruise on the chin and complained of general body pains.

“He got injured from the same collapsed surface in the pit and he sustained a cut on the forehead, bruise on the right chin and general body pains,” Mr. Njase said.

He said police in the area visited the scene and picked up the deceased’s body and deposited it in Mwinilunga district hospital mortuary.

Mr. Njase said the injured victim has been issued with a medical form and he is currently stable. – ZANIS
