Eastern province geared to fight army worms

Ministry of Agriculture in Chipata district has distributed 1,350 litres of pesticides to fight off the fall army worms.

 The district has recorded more than six thousand hectors of land infested with the fall army worms.

 District Acting Senior Agriculture Officer (SAO) Mirriam Goma says Chipata district which has more than 19,000 affected households.

 She told ZANIS in an interview that the ministry is using agriculture camp staff to distribute the pesticides to affected households.

 “We currently have an affected area of 6,261.5 hectares and we are using camp officers in the district to ensure that all the affected households receive the pesticides. The infestation level is currently at 7.5 percent,” she said.

 Mrs Goma urged all the farmers to correctly use the pesticides as government spent a lot money on the chemicals.

 “We do not want to get reports of the people selling the pesticides,”Mrs Goma said.  Eastern Province received an initial 9,000 thousand litres of pesticides to be distributed among the 14 affected districts in the region.
