Zesco yard burglar gets community service

A 31-YEAR-OLD man has been committed to over 40 days of Community Service at the Choma Subordinates Court for trespassing at a Zesco junk yard.

Oment Muchindu of Choma pleaded guilty in the Choma Magistrates Court to one count of Criminal Trespass contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence are that Muchindu on October 10 in Choma, jointly and whilst acting with others unknown entered Zesco Limited premises with intent to steal or annoy.
When he appeared for plea before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa, he admitted the charge read to compelling the Court to record a plea of guilty.
According to the facts dictated by Public Prosecutor Dexter Kwalela, the suspect was apprehended around midnight by the Security officer on duty.
When questioned, he admitted that he wanted to steal the metal bars that lay around the junkyard for the purpose of making Burglar Bars for Window Frames after being promised K200 for the work.
When the statement was read to him by the State through the Interpreter Munika Mwananshiku in Tonga language which he understood better, he admitted that the Facts were a true and correct.
Magistrate Munukayumbwa thus committed him to 45 days community service and in default to serve 3 months imprisonment with hard labour.
