SPEAKER SHOPLIFTER JAILED 3 MONTHS

THE 40-YEAR-OLD man who told the Choma Magistrates Court that he shoplifted a Bluetooth Speaker from a Chinese Supermarket because he wanted to take his ill son to the hospital has been sentenced to 3 months in jail.

This was in a matter in which Elijah Phiri a Bricklayer of Choma was charged with Theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that Phiri on 16th April 2020 in Choma stole 1 Bluetooth Speaker valued at K280 the property of Easy Home Supermarket.

When Phiri appeared for plea, before Magistrate Muyambango Munukayumbwa, he admitted allegations levelled against him which saw the Court adjourning the matter to a later date for facts.

According to facts dictated by Public Prosecutor Coillard Sikwalulwa, the accused was seen hiding the Bluetooth Speaker in his underwear by the Shop Assistant.

Phiri was followed till he exited the Shop before he was apprehended and taken to the Police were he admitted the charge.

When the Court asked him if the facts were true, Phiri confirmed that everything read was correct and he had nothing to add or subtract.

After Magistrate Munukayumbwa found him guilty upon his own admission, he sentenced him to 3 months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date of arrest.

Phiri was informed of his right to appeal to the High Court within 14 days if he was not happy.
