FIVE police officers who were detained in connection with the death of two murder suspects in Mpika, Muchinga Province, have been charged with murder.
Muchinga Province Commissioner of Police Joel Njase said the officers will appear in court soon.
Mr Njase said postmortem results of the two murder suspects who died after allegedly jumping off a moving police indicated that the two died of impact trauma to the heads, torsos and limbs.
“Postmortem for two murder suspects, Elijah Nondo Mwiko and Peter Mwaba Mwiko, was conducted by a pathologist from Lusaka on Friday in Mpika Urban Mortuary from 11:15 hours to 16:00 hours and the doctor’s finding are that the two died as a result of blunt impact trauma to the head, torsos and limbs,” Mr Njase said.
“Furthermore, the five officers have been finally charged and arrested for the subject offence
[murder]
and will appear in court soon.”
Mr Njase said police action on the issue was meant to provide justice to both the suspects and officers since the court will establish the truth from the investigations conducted and medical option from postmortem results.
He said the Zambia Police Service would remain professional and accountable to the public on all matters related to policing.
Mr Njase identified the murder suspects as detective inspector Munga James, detective sergeant Simachulu Josam, detective constable Nkweto, detective Sergeant Chanda and constable Mulenga.
Elijah Nondo Mwiko and Peter Mwaba Mwiko of Mpika district were alleged to have shot dead a Chilonga Mission Hospital acting human resource officer early this month.
They died after jumping off a moving police vehicle on the way to scene reconstruction on Monday on at 12:45 hours.
They were facing the charge of murder.
