LIVINGSTONE SPORTS FESTIVAL KICKS OFF

ALL is set for the 2019 Livingstone Sports Festival Limited (LSF) which aims to deliver regular sporting events in the tourist capital to assist with tourism in the city, while adding and bringing to light the sporting prowess of Zambian athletes.

In a statement to the Sun sport by the LSF, this year’s goal was to support the Southern Province Exposition with sporting activities during the two weekends at the 2019 Investment Expo.

The LSF said the focus this year was around sporting history, emphasizing the link between history, sports and tourism

These sporting activities would take place during the period September 13 to 22 .

Livingstone has several sporting locations, which have been of world class interest to which LSF aims to revive the interest

 The idea is to revive the sporting interest that Livingstone attracted in the past and In so doing, LSF aimed to produce sustainable avenues for athletes to be exposed to world-class standards and practices in various sports.

Among the activities will be football with the main event being a local Derby between Zesco Falls FC and ZAF Blue Arrows.

Four notable Zambian football icons, including Christopher Katongo, the captain of the Zambian team that won the African Cup of Nations in 2012, will feature in the two sides.

 The day of football pays tribute to the great Godfrey Chitalu who in 1972 scored 107 goals in a season, an unofficial world record.

Other events include matches between rural teams composing of both school boys and schoolgirls.

Trail Running  will also be an official national event as there will be a 10Km and 4Km trail running route at Baobab hill In partnership with Baobab Trail Run.

The route will be right at the edge of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National park, promising unforgettable views of flora and fauna.

The event will remember in particular Yotam Muleya, a talented cross country runner from Choma, who famously beat the British Champion in 1958 but shortly after lost his life tragically in the USA before his career really took off.
