Science, Technology key to national prosperity

WE concur with the observation by Dziwa Science and Technology Trust that our country, Zambia, could only attain real prosperity through a scientifically informed citizenly.

According to Dziwa executive director Veronica Mwaba there is need for science to take centre stage in Zambia and to be at the heart of national development if the country has to prosper.

She said science and technology play a vital role in national income generation, and in ensuring national security and social stability.

But unfortunately, we, as a nation, have decided to give more space and attention to issues which matter less to national development, like politics, sports, entertainment and business, rather than to science and technology.

Ms Mwaba’s observation is indeed spot on and cannot be overemphasized.

National development at any given phase is always linked to technology, and like they say, technology only happens when there is advancement in science. Therefore, science, technology and development are interlinked.

Every nation needs development, just like every individual does. But for development to happen, science and technology should and need to play a key role. Science is basically the study of knowledge (which is translated into a system and used to analyze and understanding facts). Technology, on the other hand, is the application of this same scientific knowledge.

It should be born in mind that, for any successful economy, particularly in today’s quest for knowledge-based economies, science, technology and engineering, are the basic requisites.

If nations do not implement science and technology, then the chances of getting developed become minimal. Science and Technology is associated in all means with modernity and it is an essential tool to development.

Modernization in every aspect of life is the biggest example of the implementation of science and technology in every nation. With the introduction of modern gadgets in every walk of life, life has been made easier and this has been made possible only because of implementing science and technology together.

Without having modern equipment in all sectors, be it in medicines, infrastructure, aviation, electricity, information technology or any other field, the advancements and benefits that we face today would not have been possible.

Such is the influence of science and technology for the development of a nation.

For every nation to get developed, the application of both science and technology has to go hand-in-hand. Villages are developed into towns and towns to through the expansion of science and technology.

Today, countries are classified as developed and developing countries based on their economy and their application of science and technology. If carefully analysed, one gets to understand that countries which have a strong base in science and technology are the ones that have developed faster.

Science and technology have made life a lot easier and also a lot better, with the advancement of medicines and diagnosis of diseases. There has also been remarkable development in education, communication, agriculture, industry and other sectors.

It goes without saying that, a nation’s development and prosperity is judged, to a large extend, by the status of its science and technology base. A scientifically unsophisticated society simply means an underdeveloped nation. Without proper implementation of science and technology, no nation could prosper. Period.

As a nation, we need to equip our people, particularly the youth, with all possible technological facilities to support their scientific research and innovation because they hold the future of Zambia in their hands, and they could get our nation to more advanced levels than it is today.
