Lusaka street vendors let loose…LCC assures that there will be no more harassment of the vendors

STREET vendors in Lusaka are free to trade without harassment from the Lusaka City Council, says Deputy Mayor Chilando Chitangala.

Mr Chitangala said that despite having difficulties in keeping the city clean there will be no more harassment of street vendors.

He said that the council had received a number of complaints about vendors being harassed, the situation she said was unfortunate.

Ms. Chitangala said that the council would find other means of managing the situation unlike confiscating goods from the vendors and taking them to court.

She said however that the council would instead keep going round and removing them from the wrong places that they would be trading from.

“We will manage that and I can assure you that there will be no harassment of any sort. We have also heard of hawkers coming on board but we do not issue licenses for them because we will not manage them,” she said.

She said that the council was also in talks with PF so that the issue that had always been a huge challenge could be resolved once and for all.

Ms. Chitangala admitted that street vending was becoming a problem for the council and that it had received a lot of complaints from the party wanting the vendors to be given trading places.

She said that the council would ensure that it found alternative trading places for them and ensure that they did not come back anywhere near town.

She however expressed displeasure that most vendors had abandoned Tokyo and Lumumba markets and slowly going back to the streets.

She said that this made it very difficult for the council to keep the city clean and create parking spaces for people working within town.

She also said that Simon Mwewa Market that will accommodate more than 4,000 vendors was at 90 percent completion.
