Unloved wife divorced, awarded K5, 000

MUTINTA MULAYE writes

A MAN of Lusaka’s Chipata Overspill has divorced his wife in the Boma Local Court alleging that he never loved her from the start and was ordered to compensate his former wife with K5, 000.

This was in a case in which Lawrence Mwamba, 26, took Silvia Mauvula, 23, to court and told senior local court magistrate Mpundu Mwape Fwambo that he was forced to marry his wife after he impregnated her.

“At first I damaged her and we got married in 2015. We started discussing the way forward and her relatives brought her to my family. She stayed with my brother until she was 8 months pregnant,

“She then came to stay with me until she gave birth. We went through many problems and I decided we could not stay together. We took her back but her parents refused to take her back,” Mwamba said.

He said he told his wife’s parents that he wanted to go to school first and would fetch her after school.

“I went out of the country and two days after I came back she was brought home. After a few complications they got her again,

“When I went to see her last week her family refused me to see my child. I have no access to my child and I never really loved this woman. She wanted to use some medicines on me to make me love her. I just want my child, not her,” Mr Mwamba said..

In defence Mauvula told the court that problems in their marriage started when she fell pregnant.

“When I fell pregnant, he found a girlfriend who seemed to be the cause of our problems,” she said.

She told the court that at first Mwamba told her he was married and even denied being responsible for her pregnancy.

“Even when I was staying at his mother’s place, there were issues and I started having problems with his sisters. They stopped sharing food with me so my uncle came to collect me,” she said.

The court found that there was no love in the marriage which was full of problems and cruelty perpetuated by Mwamba.

Divorce was granted and Mwamba was ordered to compensate Mauvula with K5, 000.
