MARKETEERS at Kaunda Square market have commended Munali Member of Parliament Nkandu Luo for directing the council to be fining people found selling outside.
The marketeers said the directive was good because it would give a chance to everyone to sell their merchandise without difficulties.
One of the marketeers, Melody Vumisa, said the situation would be different from the way it was some time back where some marketeers were blocking customers from getting inside the market shelter.
Ms Vumisa said some marketeers were blocking customers from getting into the market shelter because they were buying from those selling outside.
“Customers feel it is a waste of time for them to get inside the market to buy their merchandise when they can even buy from outside. Most of them are always in a hurry and the nearer they find merchandise, the better,” she said.
She said the culprits would change their habits if the council enforced Professor Luo’s directive.
She said the directive deserved commendation by all well-meaning citizens because it would promote sanity at the market.
Another marketeer, Maillesi Ngoma, said the directive would also help keep the market clean and presentable.
Ms Ngoma said the market would also have enough space for conducting business, unlike a situation where traders were all over the place.
Prof Luo directed the Lusaka City Council on Tuesday to charge K200 whoever would be found selling merchandise outside the market as penalty.
