A CONFERENCE to encourage youths in Southern Africa to embrace agriculture has been planned for Zambia in September by Solidaridad Network Foundation in partnership with Young Emerging Farmers Initiative.

Solidaridad country manager for Zambia and Malawi Angela Mulenga said her organization and its partners were putting up measures to ensure youths got involved in agriculture without them looking at it with negativity.

Ms Mulenga said Solidaridad had been working with the government of Zambia through the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of livestock to improve the lives of youths and women by providing market linkages, expertise on crop management and sustainable land management.

She said the conference would be a great effort for youths to interact with other youths from the southern parts of the African continent in agriculture and were making a living out of it.

“The conference will be held here in Zambia, we will have a lot of activities from the Hackathon for Computer Scientists, showcasing of new technology and exchange of new ideas on how together we can better and make agriculture fun,” Ms Mulenga said

Ms Mulenga has therefor urged all youths interested in agriculture to attend the conference which will be held in Chisamba.

Meanwhile the ministry of agriculture has begun preparations for the 2019/2020 farming season with extra measures being taken to ensure successful implementation of the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) to avoid the challenges faced in the previous farming season.

Ministry Permanent Secretary Songowayo Zyambo said mechanisms were being put in place to ensure that agro dealers were paid on time during the 2019/2020 farming season.

“The ministry is working hard to ensure that farming inputs are distributed to all districts and issued to farmers before the onset of the rains of the 2019/2020 farming season,” Mr. Zyambo said

He said accessing of inputs by beneficiary farmers would start on September 1 as to enable farmers have inputs early and plant on time to guarantee better yields.

Mr. Zyambo said details of districts that would be serviced through the electronic voucher system and those to be serviced through the direct input supply modality wwould be communicated to all districts through the respective provincial agricultural coordinators.
