GOVERNMENT in Siavonga has assured that the process for shortlisting of successful applicants under the US$29 million Aquaculture Development Project will be held in a transparent manner.

District Commissioner Lovemore Kanyama said in an interview the district had received over 400 applications for the loans.

Mr Kanyama thanked residents for responding to his call to participate in the project being spearheaded by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC).

He said Siavonga being the capital city for fish farming in the country, he expects the residents to lead and fully utilise the opportunity given to them by the government.

Mr Kanyama said the district had abundant water resources like Kariba Dam and Zambezi River coupled with the recently commissioned fish feed making plants which must be utilised by local people to better their livelihoods through venturing into fish farming.

He urged those who had applied for the CEEC funding in other districts to consider going to Siavonga to invest in fish farming considering the abundant water in the area.

Mr Kanyama said those who would not be shortlisted in the current funding should not lose hope but wait for the next opportunity.

“The selection will be transparent and those who will not be considered due to high turnout should not lose hope but wait for next opportunity,” he said.

Mr Kanyama said Government wanted to see that citizens were empowered with self-employment.
