Jumbos terrorise Tembwe, Kambombo

PETER SICHALI writes

ABOUT 15 elephants have invaded Buli and Katagalika villages in chiefs Tembwe and Kambombo’s areas in Chama District, Muchinga Province Commissioner of Police Joel Njase has said.

Mr Njase said there is a life-threatening situation in the area as human-animal conflicts have increased in Buli and Katangalika villages.

He said the 15 elephants have been seen looking for food in people’s farms.

Mr Njase said the Department of Wildlife and National Parks had deployed officers to the affected areas to ensure that the situation is brought under control.

And Mr Njase has bemoaned the many cases of human trafficking and related cases in the province.

He said 10 prohibited immigrants were arrested in Isoka last week and that law enforcement agencies had intercepted another group in Chinsali district.

“It is clear that we have a high number of human trafficking issues. We have intercepted another group in Chinsali and it appears it is an organised movement,” Mr Njase said.

He said Chinsali District Joint Operations Committee (DJOC) had been directed by the Provincial Joint Operation Committee (PJOC) to interrogate the migrants and establish those behind their movements.

Mr Njase said his office would issue a comprehensive statement once investigations were concluded.

Meanwhile, a motor cyclist in Chinsali district has died after plunging into a drainage.

Mr Njase said the accident happened on Saturday around 18:40 hours on Chinsali- Kasama road at FTC area in Chinsali district.

He identified the motorcyclist as Thomas Kaluba, 28, of Farmers Training Centre (FTC) area who was riding a motor bike.

“The accident happened when the rider failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed, hence went off the road and fell in the drainage causing him to sustain a fractured right arm and a deep cut on the face and he died at Chinsali General Hospital where he was receiving treatment,” Mr Njase said.
