GOVERNMENT says there is need to promote cultures and traditions because they are unifying factors which reduce ignorance and segregation.

Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs permanent secretary Yande Mwape said cultures and traditions should be encouraged as it promotes global peace and unity.

Ms Mwape was speaking at the weekend when she graced the opening of the 3rd International Cultural Diversity Festival conducted by Horizons Schools in Lusaka.

Horizon Education Trust School held the international cultural and diversity festival on Saturday under the theme ‘Dialogue and Development’ where about 32 embassies were represented.

Ms Mwape, who thanked the school for organising the event, said her ministry considered cultural festivals as unifying factors in the world that fights ignorance and segregation.

“The ministry considers cultural festivals as important events that serve as open windows through which particular groups of people showcase their cultural identities

“Cultural festivals are a unifying factor as they bring together people from all walks of life regardless of their tribe, creed and political affiliation,” Ms Mwape said.

She said Government was happy to see Horizon Schools seeking to reinforce unity in diversity which was embodied in Zambia’s national motto of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’.

Ms Mwape said it was gratifying to note that Horizon School had taken a full share of the noble task of demonstrating how cultures and traditions could be unifying factors in the world as regards to the fight against ignorance, segregation and the need for global peace and security.
