SOME youths in Lusaka’s Mtendere Township have welcomed the Chrispin Chiinda sponsored pool tournament saying it has kept them busy and away from engaging in bad behaviour.

Speaking during an award ceremony on for the 2019 Chrispin Chiinda Pool Tournament, Mtendere sports committee chairperson Erick Kasomo said Chiinda had changed many young people’s lives by sponsoring the tournament.

Kasomo said a number of young people in Mtendere and surrounding areas had benefited from Chiinda’s tournament as it kept them active by doing something productive.

“Because of this tournament sponsored by Mr Chiinda, a lot of young people of Mtendere, Kalingalinga and Kalikiliki have been kept busy and away from engaging in illicit activities such as abusing drugs and alcohol,” Kasomo said.

He said young people in the area were appreciative of Chiinda’s heart for the youth and urged him to continue with the same spirit.

“We do not want to take this support for granted. We can only urge you to continue empowering us as young people through sport, and may the Lord bless you because you are changing our lives,” Kasomo said.

He, however, said there was a need to establish pool clubs away from bars.

“We have a lot of young people, including girls, that want to participate in this sport but are not able to because pool tournaments are mostly held in bars and night clubs thereby disadvantaging our friends who do not enter such places.

“Our appeal to you and other stakeholders is that please, help us establish clubs in environments conducive enough for everyone,” Kasomo said.

He said the youth would like the tournament to be an annual event as it was positively impacting their lives and urged other people to emulate Chiinda.

And addressing the fully packed audience before presenting trophies to the winning clubs and players, Chiinda, who is popularly known as Chris Mall, pledged full support and commitment in sponsoring the tournament.

Chiinda urged the youth to use their skills and talents, adding that one could make a living out of sport like pool.

“You need to make use of your skills and that is why I am ready to continue supporting this tournament and other similar activities as long as they are helping you in a positive way,” Chiinda said.

Chiinda urged the youth to get together and share ideas on issues affecting them.

“We need to be united as young people and see what we can do for ourselves and our communities, and I am here for you because I want you to prosper in your lives,” he said.

Chiinda, a Lusaka businessman, said there was need to support young people to engage in sport.

He said if well supported the youth could contribute to the development of the constituency and the country at large.

The Chrispin Chiinda Pool Tournament had been running for three months where Chiinda pumped in a K7,000 sponsorship package. Over 16 clubs took part.
