Warriors in ‘do or die’ battle

MUKWIMA CHILALA writes

AS the short super league transitional league comes to an end this weekend, stream A pacesetters Kabwe Warriors need to beat Red Arrows this afternoon to realize their continental aspirations which have eluded  them for decades.

Warriors host Arrows at the Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu stadium this afternoon in a tie in which both teams need to win as both in their run for a position not only in the title playoff but the newly restructured ABSA Cup as well as a spot in continental competition.

The top two sides in each stream qualify to both the ABSA Cup as well landing a spot in the continental cup competition.

The two teams are separated by only a point in a stream that is yet to be decided for both the top and second spot with Warriors being the pacesetters on 31 points.

Zesco United, Zanaco and Red Arrows are all on 30 points but United have a better goal difference of the two as title contenders.

Among all the four stream A contenders , only Warriors has not qualified to any of the two continental slots to close to two decades.

Zesco and Zanaco having been perpetual participants in the last 10 years while Arrows last made it in the competition in 2009.

Warriors, the five-time league champions last made it to continental competition in 2002 but only reached the second round of the competition.

A win for the Zambia Railway sponsored side against Arrows will earn Warriors a spot in the title playoff having last won the league in 1987.

A loss or a draw for Warriors could replicate their 1987 season when they went unbeaten throughout the course of the league to be crowned champions.
