Police Arrest Lusaka Man Over Murder of Suspected Thief

Police in Lusaka have arrested 38-year-old Richard Maluti of Kabwata in connection with the setting ablaze and subsequent death of a man accused of having stolen the side mirror of his Mazda motor vehicle.

Derrick Simwase, aged 30, was admitted at UTH between 07:30 hours and 13:30 hours yesterday before his death, police have said.

He was alleged to have stolen a side mirror of a Madza Vehicle registration nubbier AJD 4997, the property of Maluti of Muzovu Street in Kabwata.

“The alleged theft occurred on 28th April, 2019, at about 06:30 hours at the residence of Mr Maluti who later drove to the Clan’s Nite Club where the deceased is alleged to have been set ablaze after petrol [was poured on him]. Police have today, 29th April, 2019, since detained the owner of the said motor vehicle. We would like to reiterate our warning to the members of the public that they should desist from taking the law in their own hands but rather let the due process of the law take its full course,” stated Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.
