A UK-BASED Zambian Chaka Henderson has donated assorted items worth K30, 000 to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
Ms Henderson said she decided to donate the items with the help of other NICU mothers who were based in the UK to mitigate the challenges that such mothers faced.
She said based on her experience she fully understood what mothers went through back home in Zambia.
“I was an NICU mother four years ago after I gave birth to a set of premature twins weighting 450 grams and 500 grams. I lost one,” she said.
After what she went through, Ms Henderson said it was not easy to get certain things such as zero nappies, washing and bathing soap, Colgate tooth paste, tooth brush among others, adding that she thought that would be something that a mother struggled with.
She said the gesture was not by herself alone but the help of other NICU mothers and the support of the church in the UK “and my home church here in Zambia Mount Makulu Baptist church Women’s Ministry.”
Meanwhile acting Senior Medical superintendent Mulindi Mwanahamuntu said the donation would go a long way in assisting the intended targets, adding that they were days when budgets were very stiff.
Dr Mwanahamuntu said at neonatal ward they rarely asked patients to buy things because it was morally wrong to ask sick mothers to buy certain requirements.
He appealed to various stakeholders to come on board and support the mothers.
