Three boys admit stealing maize…as juvenile is jailed for fleeing cells

CHARLES MUSONDA writes

THREE boys have pleaded guilty in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court to theft of 32 fresh maize cobs valued at K320.
In the first case, Victor Muleya, 17 a footballer, and another 16 year old, a pupil, both of Zingalume compound, pleaded guilty to stealing 11 of the cobs belonging to a Mr. Sebastian Mainza on March 17, 2019.
Asked by Magistrate Albert Mwaba why he stole the maize, Muleya said he had a craving to eat the maize while the other boy said he was hungry.
In a related case, another 16 boy of Barlastone, also admitted stealing 21 fresh maize cobs belonging to the same complainant.
Asked why he stole the maize, the boy said he wanted to cook and eat them but the court asked it was possible for him to eat 21 cobs alone. He however told the court that he was caught with only five cobs.
The court has since adjourned the two matters to April 23, 2019 for facts and social welfare reports.
Earlier, a 19-year-old bus conductor was given a six months suspended sentence for escaping from lawful custody.
Facts before court were that on March 24, 2019, David Simbeye escaped from Mumbwa Road police post where he was detained for being in possession of three pairs of shoes suspected to be stolen or unlawfully obtained.
The court heard that on the material date Detective Inspector Siame assumed night shift and found five suspects in custody. They requested for permission to be taken to the toilet and the officer first took three of them and brought them back.
He then took the remaining two, including Simbeye, but after bringing them back he escaped as the officer was unlocking the cells.
He fled into deep Kanyama compound but the officer managed to chase and apprehend him with the help of the public. Despite getting a suspended sentence, Simbeye has been remanded in custody pending the other charge.
