Ban foreigners from owning land

SOME Chirundu residents have welcomed the announcement by government to ban foreigners from owning land in Zambia.

This follows an announcement by Lands minister Jean Kapata that Government was in the process of formulating a national land policy that will make it difficult for foreigners to own land.

One of the residents, Mr Alfred Sichiboya said what government was about to do was very good because some foreigners were owning large tracks of land and sometimes even displacing the locals.

Another resident of Sub-Centre area Mr Michael Jamba complained that some foreign nationals had now invaded the rural areas where they have acquired land.

Mr Jamba said other foreign nationals were renting shops where they sold groceries cheaply and disadvantaged Zambians.

He said as a result many Zambian businesses were dwindling because people were now buying from foreigners’ shop at cheaper prices.

Meanwhile Chirundu district council chairman Mr Robinson Sianduba confirmed the presence of foreigners in surrounding villages.

He feared the development would adversely affect the local business men in rural areas.

Mr Sianduba said the headmen were aware of the situation but lacked knowledge of how to properly handle the matter.
