FEES in all Zambian public secondary schools will be reduced next term to enable most people have access to education, Minister of General Education David Mabumba has said.
Mr Mabumba said no school will be allowed to charge fees of more than K300 and warned that any institution found to be abrogating the new regulations will be dealt with.
Mr Mabumba told the Sun in an interview that the fees will be reduced effective next term. “Starting next term, the maximum school fees to be charged per secondary school pupil will be K300 only.
The K300 include PTA and project fees,” he stated. “Some schools will even charge as low as K100 per term,” Mr Mabumba said. Mr Mabumba said most schools could not account for the money they collect from pupils as user fees.
He said the largest operational cost of any public school is payment of salaries, which is covered by Government. The minister said it is unacceptable that some schools in Lusaka charged as high as K500 per child.
