LUSAKA City Council (LCC) has been banned from collecting market levy from Lusaka’s Kanyama Bwafwano Market for failing to keep the trading place clean since 2011.
Market chairman, Mr Joseph Chabinga told the Sun in an interview that the decision to stop LCC from collecting the Levy was made after a series of meetings with the traders who complained of huge piles of uncollected garbage.
Mr Chabinga said it was no use for the LCC to be collecting market levy from the traders when it failed to keep the market clean.
“It used to take five to eighty months for the LCC to come and remove the garbage but they were never hesitant to collect money, so we decided to stop paying them and we have come up with our own initiatives to keep the place clean,” Chabinga said.
The Chairman said that among the initiatives was collaboration with private garbage collectors.
He said all the traders in the market were communicated to on how they should keep their premises clean by taking garbage to a collection point so that it could be picked and disposed in a proper manner.
