Livingstone Council angers bus operators

SOME bus operators in Livingstone have expressed concern over the delay by the local authorities to have the newly constructed K15.3 million Intercity Bus Terminus opened.

The drivers said that that the need to have the station opened could not be overemphasized because apart from the facility being spacious, it was clean.

One of the drivers, Obert Silumbwe told the Sun in an interview that the council should either quickly open the bus station or explain to the people why it was delaying to open the place

Mr. Silumbwe complained that the space they have been operating on for several years was not big enough to cater for big buses.

He said that they always experienced problems of parking space especially in the mornings when passengers were boarding buses to their respective destinations.

“I don’t even know if this place qualifies to be called a bus station because to me it looks like a bus stop or a place where pupils are picked up when going to school,

“ We have been crying for the constructed intercity to be opened here in Livingstone but it seems our cries have been falling on deaf ears, ” he said.

Another bus operator, Wiseman Banda said that the bus station they were operating in was not only small, but a death trap as it was prone to accidents.

He demanded for an update or explanation as to why the new bus station remained unopened.

Livingstone City Council Public Relations Manager Melvin Mukela said that the bus station would be opened as soon as the final stages of the construction were done.

Mr. Mukela admitted that the current bus station was very small and that the relevant authorities were doing all they could to ensure that the new facility was completed in no time.

He called on all long distance bus operators to exercise patience and let the authorities do uncompromised works that would stand a test of time.
