The residents of Garden Park area in Lusaka’s heavy industrial area off Mumbwa Road have expressed concern over the open trenches that were left by people quarrying for stones and sand from the area and have now filled up with rain water.
The residents said that the trenches were posing a danger to the people in the area especially the young ones who swam in them oblivious of the lurking dangers.
One of the residents, Emerine Kabanda told the Sun that they had for a long time been complaining about the ditches to relevant authorities but to no avail.
“Our children have not been playing freely because of these things. We most of the times lock them up because we fear that they may drown as others have in the past years,” Ms. Kabanda said.
She said that the need to bury the ditches could not be overemphasized as they had been living in the situation she described as a ‘calamity in waiting’ for too long.
She said that some time back before many people built their houses in the area, children used to drown in the deep ditches and would only be recovered after some days.
Another concerned resident William Banda said that the ditches had not only been a danger to the children but to adults that drink too much alcohol and ended up drowning in them.
“We are pleading with relevant authorities to come to our aid before we lose more lives here. We also fear that diseases may break out in the area because the water in the ditches is stagnant and some people use them to throw in litter,” Mr. Banda said
