YALELO, a Zambian and Africa’s largest fish producer has pledged to continue supporting the aquaculture industry and attain the country’s vision to produce 50,000 tonnes of fish per annum.
The company was in the process of expanding its fish production to 20,000 from the current 10,000 tonnes annually.
Yalelo chief executive officer Bryan McCoy said the company’s vision was to lead Zambia being the fishery power house of Africa so that Zambia could take advantage of its water resources.
Speaking in an interview in Lusaka with the Sun Mr McCoy explained that this would enable Zambia not only achieve self-sufficiency in terms of fish production but also reduce on imports.
“As Yalelo we are working to fulfil this vision, we have been focused to support Government vision and we are very proud to have been operating in a sector of the economy with explicit support of the President Edgar Lungu,
“He has expressed the desire for Zambia to achieve self-sufficiency, to be able to eliminate imports and to produce more than 50,000 tonnes of fish per year. Our industry vision is to lead Zambia being the fishery power house of Africa,” he said.
Mr McCoy further said Yalelo operated the largest fish farm in Africa in terms of production.
“We are distributing fish not just in Lusaka or Siavonga where the farm is based but in nearly in all parts of Zambia through more than 40 different outlets.”
