VEGETABLE traders at Lusaka’s Kabwata main market have abandoned their stalls in preference to street vending, says Ward 6 Councillor Longa Chiboboka.

Mr Chiboboka complained that there were many empty trading stalls in the vegetable shade at the market and wondered why people were opting to trade in streets.

He has since implored vegetable street vendors in his ward to go back and occupy empty stalls in the market.

He was speaking when he led residents of his ward in the monthly cleaning exercise and inspection of public places to monitor compliance and participation yesterday.

Mr Chiboboka said the market offered a much cleaner environment for trade than the streets.

“In line with the “Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy”, I took part in the cleaning in selected zones of Kabwata among them Kabwata Main Market,

“May I mention that there are empty trading stalls in the vegetable section, those needing them come and fill them up and trade in a clean environment,” he said.

The scenario of empty trading stalls in markets was common in all the markets in Lusaka contrary to claims by vendors that there streets.
