CHESS Federation of Zambia (CFZ) president, Mukubulo Chilufya, says children should be exposed to the sport at an early age because it helps strengthen their mental faculty.
And Chilufya has described the recently held North-Western Zonal Open Chess Tournament as a success.
Speaking in an interview with The Sun yesterday, Chilufya said Chess, being a science helps children in terms of Mathematics solving and being disciplined.
“It is such a much – focused game which helps children in cognitive development because children tend to perceive things in a particular manner,” he said.
“Chess helps kids shape up in terms of decision making and that is why we are this year going to roll it out vigorously in schools,” Chilufya said.
Meanwhile, Chilufya says he is happy with the turnout at this year’s first zonal tournament and the support received from the sponsors. He named Kansanshi Copper Mine, Trident College, Henry Courtyard and Transport Tours, as some of the sponsors supported the tournament, held at Trident College in Solwezi, from February 1 to 3.
Chilufya said the federation was now focused on ensuring that those that had qualified to the World Armature in Mexico in April were camped in preparation for the competition.
He named Woman Chess Master (WCM) armature champion, Constance Simbata, Master James Dimba and Joster Kandangwe, as some of those that have qualified to the Mexico championship.
Zambia scooped four out of the six slots that is allocated to Africa.
“On the local scene, the next zonal tournament will be held next month in Mongu, Western Province,” Chilufya said.
