GRAVEYARD SHOCKER SLASHED MAIZE CROP GROWS BACK

KETRA KALUNGA writes

THE Kabwe manicipal council is shocked that the Maize crop it slashed in December last year for being planted in an old grave yard by unknown people is fully grown within a few weeks.

Recently, Central province minister, Sydney Mushanga said he was shocked that the old John Haward cementry has been turned into a maize filed  when Lands minister, Jean Kapata paid a courtesy call on him during her visit to Kabwe district in December last year.

Ms. Kapata then directed the Zambia Police Service and the council to quickly move into action and stop the trend which she said was a sign of disrespecting for the dead.

But Town Clerk, Joel Shawa said in an interview that the local authority was shocked with reports that the maize they slashed not long ago has grown having moved into action following a directive from  Ms. Kapata.

Mr Shawa said he was informed by district commissioner, Sam Lupupa that the maize planted in the old John Haward cemenetry was fully grown.

“As the council, we are suprised that we are being told that these people went back and replanted because as soon as we were directed we move in and slashed all the maize,” he said.

He has warned that the council would have no choice but to engage the high authorities to slash the grown maize.

Mr Shawa said as the local authority they would sit and watch the act which is not backed by an law and morrally and traditionally wrong to continue.
