Take care of underlying conditions – Chilufya

SANFROSSA MANYINDA writes

THE Ministry of Health has warned that non-communicable diseases caused by smoking, abuse of alcohol and inactive physical fitness are likely to be worsened by the Coronavirus.

Consequently, the Ministry warned that one can easily die if such habits are not controlled.
Health Minister, Chitalu Chilufya, noted that diabetic and hypertensive patients were still at risk of contracting the virus.

“Hypertensive and diabetic patients have therefore been urged to take their medication as prescribed by medical personnel,” he said.

Dr Chilufya, however, expressed concern that people were more worried about law enforcers (police) than the pandemic which he said was deadly. In the last 24 hours, Zambia recorded 72 new cases of Covid-19 out of 1,169 tests done.

A death has been recorded bringing the death toll to 288 while 362 people have been discharged bringing the total number of recoveries to 11,469.

The cumulative number of cases now stands at 12,097.
