Relocate police station, pleads Chavuma DC

NOEL IYOMBWA writes

THE Zambia Police Service has been asked to relocate the police station to the Central business District, says acting District Commissioner for Chavuma Kenny Mungendenge.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Unit, Mr Mungendenge lamented that people in the district endure more than 10 kilometres to seek police services at Chavuma Police Station which is located at the Zambia-Angola border post.

Mr Mungendenge said this on Friday when the Deputy Inspector General of Police In-Charge of Administration Eugene Sibote paid a courtesy call on him.

He said the Chavuma central business district has grown and people are worried about the compromised security situation in the area.

“Police offices are far from the people. Development is in town and we need security unlike walking 10 kilometres to the border post for police services,” he said.

He revealed that the contractor who was assigned to construct a modern police station in town abandoned the project years back after the roof was blown off by the wind.

A check at the abandoned building revealed that it has been vandalised and squatters have settled around it.

And Mr. Sibote assured the District Commissioner that the issue will be brought to the attention of the ministry responsible with government buildings.

He said the Zambia Police is mandated to provide law and order everywhere and so there is need for police presence to be established in the central business district.

“We will immediately send one more vehicle to Chavuma Police Station so that our officers can be accessible any time,” Mr Sibote assured.
